The Mark Newnham trained Star Witness colt Exceed the Stars won his heat in the fastest time of the morning at the official Sydney two year old trials run on the Kensington track at Randwick on Monday morning.

Exceed the Stars (pictured as a yearling) showed the benefit of a previous trial win, jumping best and finding the front to cruise around and win in good style. He scored by half a length over Pierro colt Fiery Red who was ridden along to challenge the leader, but couldn’t quite get there with a long way back to the third horse.

They covered the 850 metres in 48.96 seconds.

A $220,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Tyreel Stud draft for Darby Racing / De Burgh Equine, Exceed the Stars is typical of his sire’s stock and is from Exceed and Excite, an Exceed and Excel half-sister to Group I winner Choice Bro.

Exceed the Stars is expected to progress now to the Group III ATC Breeders Plate on Saturday week.

Sebring also featured with two heat winners, his filly Bring the Ransom saluting for Bjorn Baker and his colt Fortress Command winning for Gerald Ryan.
