Trapeze Artist Saturday Stakes Double

Widden Stud’s Trapeze Artist has had a real resurgence this season and added two new stakes-winners to his tally on Saturday with Spicy Miss capturing the Group II ATC Sweet Embrace Stakes and then in Perth progressive 3YO The Crimson Pirate took out the Listed WATC Lex Piper Stakes (1600m).

Trained by Daniel Morton and ridden by Lucy Fiore, The Crimson Pirate ended a frustrating run of second placings when scoring a dominant win last start at Ascot on February 15 and has obviously gotten a taste for winning.

He relished the step up to 1600m to charge clear and win by two and a half lengths taking his overall record to two wins and six placings from nine starts with prizemoney topping $173,000.

Lucy Fiore has been on The Crimson Pirate for his last five starts and is beginning to work him out, given he is a gelding with a few tricks up his sleeve, but plenty of talent.

Passed in as a yearling and retained to race by Oakland Park Stud, The Crimson Pirate is a half-brother to stakes-winner King Kapa and stakes-placed Churning being one of six winners from six foals to race from stakes-winning Jet Spur mare Emmalene.

A full sister to the dam of Group I winner Uncommon James, Emmalene had a colt by Victor Ludorum (GB) last year before going to Oakland Park’s young sire Ingratiating.

The Crimson Pirate is the 12th stakes-winner for Trapeze Artist and is his seventh this season.
