Widden Stud might be synonymous with reigning champion sire Zoustar, but there are plenty of value sires on the roster in both states and three of them had smart winners on Wednesday.

The highest priced yearling by Trapeze Artist sold in 2024, talented three year-old filly Spanish Artist made it two wins from three starts when scoring as a short priced favourite at Canterbury.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Spanish Artist appreciated the 1550m and was strong to the line winning by half a length carrying 60.5kg.

Spanish Artist was a $410,000 Magic Millions purchase for Yulong from the Newhaven Park draft and is the second winner from stakes-winning import South of France (USA), a daughter of champion sire Quality Road.

Based at Widden Victoria, Russian Camelot (IRE) has had some promising three year-old winners this season from his first crop and we can add debut winner Strangethingdesire to that list after he won on debut at Geelong.

Trained by Team Hawkes and ridden by Luke Currie, Strangethingdesire was tenacious down the running and refused to bow to race favourite Geeseven, who went down by a head.

A homebred for Bill Schwarzenberg, Strangethingdesire is the second winner from Lovewithouttragedy, a winning Bel Esprit daughter of stakes-winner Miss Power Bird from a prolific Black Type family best known for producing Australian Horse of the Year Might and Power.

Lovewithouttragedy sadly died last year and her last foal is a yearling colt by Russian Camelot that is a full brother to Strangethingdesire.

Taking out the first race at Murray Bridge on debut was Anders two year-old Brave Hustler, who finished like an express train from back in the field to score an eye-catching win in the 1100m juvenile maiden.

Trained by Shane and Cassie Oxlade, Brave Hustler was a modest $5,000 Magic Millions Adelaide purchase from Pepper Tree Farm for Francesco Sghirripa and looks to have a bright future.

He is the first foal of Night Hustler, a winning half-sister by Reliable Man (GB) to Group III winner Night’s Watch with third dam being Group I winner Penny Gem.
