A homebred for Ron Finemore, two year-old Written By gelding By Napolean Hill was taking on some blueblood colts in the 1250m maiden at Canterbury on Wednesday, but showed a superior turn of foot to open his account in style.

Trained by Tom Charlton, By Napolean Hill was an unlucky second on debut at Kembla last month and punters were confident he could make amends with Nash Rawiller in the saddle.

He tracked the leaders and produced a sharp sprint to kick away and then held off the challengers to win by three quarters of a length over $1.8million Written Tycoon colt Horologist with $1.4million Wootton Bassett (GB) colt Defenseman working into third.

“He’s a horse with a fair but of upside I think. He had a good look at them around the corner when he came to the outside and showed a good turn of foot. We weren’t sort of sure what type of turn of foot he really would give us over this trip, but he had the race in his keeping very quickly,” said Nash Rawiller.

Foaled and raised at Newhaven Park for Finemore Thoroughbreds, By Napolean Hill is the second foal and first winner for unraced Not a Single Doubt mare She’s a Survivor, a full sister to dual Group I winner Shout the Bar, who was bought by Tom Magnier at the 2022 Inglis Chairman’s Sale for $2.7million.

Coolmore sold the first foal from Shout the Bar, a colt by Home Affairs, at Inglis Easter for $3million in 2025 and he topped the sale, but is yet to race.

By Napolean Hill looks a bright prospect for Written By, who stands at a fee of $22,000.
