Nicconi Winning Run Continues
Leading country trainer Brett Cavanough will be off to Randwick for the $300,000 Country Championships Final next month after promising Nicconi filly Loved Up beat older rivals to win the $100,000 Qualifier at Wagga on Sunday.
Improving sharply at her second run back from a spell, she powered home from back in the field to win the 1400 metre contest by half a length.
“I could see Richie (Bensley) was back and with cover and when the field started folding up, she was strong,” Cavanough told Sky Racing World.
“That’s what she can do, she’s nowhere near the bottom either.
“She’s a nice big filly, a scopey type and we’re off to the Championships.”
Cavanough was full of praise for the Country Championship series, the $300,000 final to be run over 1400m at Randwick on April 4.
“It’s great, it puts us on the stage, everyone in the bush that gets out of bed, owners that pay the bills, we all deserve a crack at a big cherry and now we’ve got one,” he said.
Passed in at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale by Lustre Lodge, Loved Up is a half-sister to stakes-winner Liesele from Group II placed Love’s Here.
She’s been a great money spinner for her owners winning four of nine starts and over $132,000 in prizemoney.
Loved Up is one of a string of recent winners for dual Group I winner Nicconi, who has moved to third on the Leading Second Season Sires List by winners.
