Impressive Debut for Shamal Wind
Ballarat – The Robert Smerdon stable produced a very smart debut winner at Ballarat on Thursday and punters that jumped on the bandwagon were never given a moment for concern.
Sent out a heavily backed favourite in the 1000 metre maiden, three year-old Dubawi (IRE) filly Shamal Wind ran right up to her rumoured ability to score a dominant win.
She stalked the leader for Mark Zahra and when asked for an effort in the straight, bounded clear to win by the best part of five lengths in an eye catching display.
Shamal Wind was a $55,000 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale purchase for Aquanita Racing from the draft of Widden Stud.
Bred by Widden Stud in partnership, she is the first foal from Firemaid (USA), a winning half-sister by Machiavellian to stakes-winner Bezrin and grand-daughter of Group I winner My Darling One.
Firemaid has already foaled this spring, producing a colt by Group I producing sire Stratum.
