Widden Sold Filly Stars at Flemington
Melbourne – Promising filly Shamal Wind confirmed her potential when bolting away with the Listed VRC Gucci Icons of Heritage Stakes at Flemington on Thursday.
Having just her second race start following on from her facile five length debut win at Ballarat last month, the Robert Smerdon trained Shamal Wind made a one act affair of the 1200 metre sprint, chiming in with a furlong to run and racing right away to win by two lengths in a slick 1:08.32.
Winning rider Mark Zahra has been aboard the daughter of former Darley shuttler Dubawi (IRE) in both of her trials and races and believes she has a big future.
“When I said go, she put paid to them so quickly. It’s nice to get to the 250 and everyone else is off the bit,” he said.
“I think she could be something special, she’s very good.”
Already a winner of more than $100,000 in prizemoney, Shamal Wind was a $55,000 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale purchase for Aquanita Racing from the draft of Widden Stud and runs for Mr and Mrs Lenny Lucas.
Bred by Widden Stud in partnership, she is the first foal from Firemaid (USA), a winning half-sister by Machiavellian to stakes-winner Bezrin and grand-daughter of Group I winner My Darling One.
Firemaid has already foaled this spring, producing a colt by Group I producing sire Stratum.
