Widden Sold Winner for Star Thoroughbreds
The famed purple and white Star Thoroughbreds colours were carried to victory at the ATC metropolitan meeting at Hawkesbury on Wednesday by promising Fastnet Rock mare Oceans, a $120,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the draft of Widden Stud.
Jumping sharply in class from a maiden win at Kembla to a Benchmark 70 event in town, the Gai Waterhouse trained Oceans rose to the challenge, making a swift getaway for Tommy Berry to lead throughout.
The four year-old found the line strongly to win the 1200 metre dash by a length and a quarter, her overall record now two wins and a third from five starts.
“To come from a maiden win at Kembla to a city standard race and win is a good effort and she was always in control,” said stable representative Mark Newnham.
“She just lacked strength earlier on, but this time in she’s taken to her training and done well, so the results are there.”
Oceans is one of three winners from Kapalua Bay, a half-sister by Grosvenor to Group III winners Queen Isolt and Gillespie.
Kapalua Bay has a yearling filly by Stratum.
