Magic Spring for Zoustar
In 2018, Zoustar launched himself into the stratosphere with a trifecta in the Group I VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes – Sunlight, Zousain, Lean Mean Machine – and 12 months on his place as an elite stallion is assured with a blazing spring carnival delivering six individual Group winners.
Among those six Group winners are three that were sold by Widden at the Magic Millions in Sunlight and her full sister Sisstar, who both won Group races at Flemington, well as Madam Rouge.
A Magic Millions graduate himself, Zoustar has always had a keen affinity with the Gold Coast sale with his first crop generating over $8.4 million in 2017 making him the third leading sire by aggregate behind only Snitzel and I Am Invincible.
That first crop included the aforementioned who after her dominant win in the $2million Magic Millions 2YO Classic has since added victories in the Group I VRC Newmarket Handicap, MVRC William Reid Stakes, VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes & Group II Gilgai Stakes.
Her last run in the spring produced a brave second in the $7.5 million Golden Eagle over 1500 metres, which was her first attempt beyond 1200 metres, a performance that will see Sunlight blessed with a myriad of racing options in 2020.
Trained by Tony and Calvin McEvoy, Sunlight has the overall record of 11 wins and seven placings from 21 starts with $6.5million in earnings and will probably be the flagbearer for her sire for a good while to come.
Sunlight is one of 13 stakes-winners from the first two crops sired by Zoustar, whose progeny are invariably attractive individuals stamped with the good looks of their sire.
A stallion with refinement as well as the power physique of a sprinter, Zoustar perfectly captures the blood of champion sires Encosta de Lago and Redoute’s Choice, who feature prominently in his pedigree.
