Widden Graduate Wins Sheraco Stakes
A Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner, quality mare Driefontein was winless during her three year-old season, but she bounced back at Rosehill on Saturday to score a tenacious victory in the Group III ATC Sheraco Stakes.
Sporting the purple and white colours of Star Thoroughbreds, the Gai Waterhouse trained mare was perfectly ridden by Tommy Berry travelling just behind the leader and then slipping away down the running to win the 1200 metre sprint by a length.
It was her first run back from a spell and her trainer has lofty plans for the daughter of champion sire Fastnet Rock.
“She’s come back super and I’ve always had it in the back of my mind to send her to Melbourne for the Myer Classic (Group I),” Waterhouse said.
“Now she’s earned some prizemoney to pay her way.”
A $75,000 Magic Millions purchase for Star Thoroughbreds from the Widden Stud draft, Driefontein has won five of 16 starts earning some $1.6 million in prizemoney.
Driefontein was bred by Bylong Park Thoroughbreds and is one of five winners for slick stakes-winner Follow Gold, a sister to another speedy juvenile stakes-winner in Export Gold.
