The $100,000 Super Maiden (1300m) at Warwick Farm on Wednesday for three year-olds attracted a highly competitive field with several contenders also eligible for the $100,000 Inglis Xtra bonus and to the delight of astute trainer Matthew Smith, his Anders filly Queen’s Gamble collected all of the cash.

Placed at her first three starts including two metro second placings in her current preparation, Queen’s Gamble was taking on a short priced favourite in Frankel filly Satin Serenade, biut had race fitness on her side.

Tommy Berry had ridden Queen’s Gamble in her first two runs back this time in and was keen to keep the ride and the decision paid dividends.

She powered to the lead after turning for home and dashed clear of the favourite to win by two and a half lengths.

“It was a very good win and a very good ride as Tommy was patient when he needed to be and it was a good win,” said Matt Smith.

“The fact Tommy stayed with her today was a big plus and he could have easily jumped on to something else, but he thought there was more in the tank than what we were seeing and he was confident when she got over a bit further she would be better. She was very impressive today.”

Queen’s Gamble was a modest $25,000 Inglis Classic purchase for her trainer from Widden Stud and runs for a big syndicate of stable clients, who have reason to celebrate tonight.

With a win and three placings from four starts, Queen’ s Gamble has banked some $80,000 and change, plus her $100,000 Inglis Xtra bonus today.

“She came off a good farm being Widden Stud bred and wasn’t an expensive yearling, but was a really good type and it’s great to see her pull this race off today,” Smith added and indicated he would look towards a stakes race next for the talented filly.

Queen’s Gamble is the second winner from four foals to race from Gifted Queen, an unraced Zoustar mare from the family of Group I winner Ozzmosis and Group II winners Learning to Fly , Hips Don’t Lie and Splintex.

Gifted Queen had a colt last spring by Admire Mars (Jpn) and was then covered by Trapeze Artist.

Queen’s Gamble looks a bright prospect for Widden Stud’s value sire Anders, who stands for just $9,900 this spring.
