Sad Passing of Stratum

 In 2016

It is with great sadness that Widden Stud announce the passing of Stratum after suffering a heart attack in his paddock on Tuesday.

Stratum won the Gr.1 Golden Slipper in 2005 for trainer Paul Perry and his clients the Wallace family before retiring to Widden the following year and was an instant success, being crowned both Champion First Season Sire and Champion 2YO Sire, highlighted by the deeds of Crystal Lily who emulated her sire by winning the 2010 Golden Slipper.

His progeny also included Guy Walter’s four-time Group One winner and crowd favourite Streama, and last season’s Gr.1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes winner Stratum Star.

“It’s a very sad day for us all,” said Widden’s owner Antony Thompson.

“He was a great stallion and such a lovely kind horse. He was great to work with and he will be sadly missed.”

One of Australia’s most versatile sires, Stratum has to date sired 389 winners, including 30 stakes winners and progeny earnings of over $45 million.
