Northern Meteor Filly Impressive

Gai Waterhouse has had no shortage of winners by her former star sprinter Northern Meteor and produced another at Randwick on Wednesday when Amanpour opened up to win by nearly seven lengths.

The three year-old filly had placed four times at her previous six runs, but was stepping up to 1800 metres for the first time and found the staying test very much to her liking.

She bowled along in the lead for Tommy Berry and was never challenged at any stage, coasting home to win the maiden by six and three quarter lengths.

“She’s been crying out for a trip,” said stable representative Mark Newnham.

“Gai has been extending her work and you could tell that this was just what she was looking for.”

A Gooree Stud homebred, albeit for Mr Henry Cojuangco, Amanpour is a half-sister to stakes-winner Turf Express from Marscay mare Newscaster

Newscaster was one of 166 mares covered last spring by another Gooree Stud bred Group I winning sprinter in Your Song, who stands at Widden Stud as did Northern Meteor before his premature death last year.
