Stakes Potential for Stratum Filly

Speed and tenacity paid off again for improving Stratum filly Echo Gal, who led throughout to score a thrilling win at Canterbury on Wednesday.

Ridden forward from the outside gate by Winona Costin, Echo Gal showed all her customary pace and fought on to score a nose win in the Benchmark 70 event against older mares over 1200 metres.

Her trainer Gai Waterhouse was well pleased with the win and will be aiming the filly at Black Type races in the future.

The first foal of stakes-placed Encosta de Lago mare Pink Siris, Echo Gal was consigned to the 2013 Magic Millions by Newgate Farm and purchased by Star Thoroughbreds for $145,000.

She has now won three of six starts earning just shy of $100,000 in prizemoney.

Interestingly she was bred at Ascot Park on the outskirts of Sydney by Bob Hannon, who also bred and sold last year’s Cox Plate hero Shamus Award, who is busy covering his first mares at Widden Stud this spring.
