A massive pinhook winner at the sales, Zousain three year-old Superb Spirit is now a racetrack winner after saluting at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Trained by Francis Lui, Superb Spirit was a close fourth on debut at Sha Tin in early April and champion jockey  Zac Purton was happy to stick with the gelding for his second outing.

Sent of a short priced favourite in the Class 4 event over 1200m, Superb Spirit asserted himself late and surged hard to the line to win by three-quarters of a length.

“(Superb Spirit) is a nice horse,” Franci Lui said.

“In the future, I think he will stay further as he has a big stride. Hopefully, he can be a Classic Mile horse in time.”

An $80,000 Inglis Classic purchase from Widden Stud for astute pinhooker Tal Nolen, Superb Spirit was re-offered in the Nolen Racing draft at the Inglis Ready 2 Race Sale and made $500,000 when bought by Magus Equine.

Superb Spirit is the fifth winner from five foals to race from Totally Sure, a winning half-sister by Not a Single Doubt to Group III winner Tuscan Sling from stakes-winner Firenza.

Totally Sure had a colt by Zousain last year and is back in foal to him again.

Superb Spirit is the sixth winner this season in Hong Kong for Zousain, whose fee has been set at $22,000.
