Widden Purchase New Star Mares – Memo & Miss Celine
Speedy Capitalist filly Memo is no stranger to the Magic Millions sale ring having been purchased at the Gold Coast as a yearling by Snowden Racing for $350,000 and she sold at the MM National Broodmare Sale on Tuesday for $1.1million and is on her way to Widden Stud.
She was offered as a yearling by Newgate and was presented again in their care today with David Redvers Bloodstock/Widden Stud securing the three year-old, whose best win to date has been at two in the Group III ATC Magic Night Stakes.
Memo fits a very successful profile for Widden Stud in being fast and precocious with a second placing in the 2024 Magic Millions 2YO Classic behind O’Ole on her resume.
“This is in our wheelhouse. We have had a lot of luck with these types of mares. Humma Humma comes to mind as a similar type. We paid a million dollars for her,” said Antony Thompson.
“When I saw Memo, she reminded me of Humma Humma and that gave us some confidence with the success we’ve had with her.
“She looks perfect for Zoustar. There is Fastnet Rock in the pedigree which works so well. Capitalist will suit and there are a few other parts of the pedigree that go well with Zoustar.
“I we paid a bit or two more than we were hoping but we wanted to buy her.”
Thompson will not look to waste time with Memo, who will go to stud this spring.
“I think she’ll go to stud. She was that good, sharp two-year-old and I don’t think she’s got a lot more to prove,” he added.
“We’ll get her home and get ready to be covered this season. We’re lucky that we’ve got some really good clients who back us with these types of mares.”
Widden quickly added another mare of similar profile with Magnus’s juvenile stakes-winner Miss Celine also secured for $800,000.
“We’re looking for early, nice, young sexy mares to go to Zoustar and we bought her and Memo just before for exactly the same job,” said David Redvers.
“They’re exactly the types of mares that work so well with him and we’re very excited to get them. I wasn’t sure the company we keep here we’d be allowed to.”
