The three year-old colts and geldings maiden over 1200m at Sandown on Wednesday had a hot favourite in Group placed colt Zambales, but the Godolphin homebred had to settle for second when he came up short against Too Darn Hot (GB) colt Somethings Burnin’.

Zambales contested four G1 races last season among his seven starts, so a maiden return was considered a soft target, but the Chris Waller trained Somethings Burnin’ is also a colt on the up.

Third on debut to subsequent stakes-winner Southend at Newcastle in the autumn, he was spelled after finishing unplaced to that colt in the Group III ATC Baillieu and was making his seasonal return.

He sliced between runners to hit the front for Damian Lane with 100m to run and was soft at the finish beating Zambales by a length.

“We were pretty confident today, although he’s been extremely unlucky with barrier draws, so we’ve had to scratch a few times and give him a third trial, so he was pretty fit,” said stable representative Lizzie Collett.

“He did a few things wrong last prep, but he’s getting there and just taking time to mature. He did things right today and finished off extremely well.”

Damian Lane was well pleased with Somethings Burnin’ and predicts more to come.

“He’s trialled really well this preparation and is starting to put it together which is a good sign,” he said.

“I was quite negative from the gates and was really happy with how he settled and travelled throughout the run.”

An $850,000 Inglis Easter purchase from Widden Stud for Chris Waller Racing / Mulcaster Bloodstock, Somethings Burnin’ runs for Ritchies Racing and is the second winner from two foals to race from Group II placed Foxwedge mare Aristocratic Miss, a daughter of stakes-winner Golden Pedigree.

Aristocratic Miss produced a filly by Supido last spring and was then covered by Too Darn Hot’s champion son Broadsiding, so will produce a three-quarter sibling to Somethings Burnin’ this spring.
