Another Widden Sold Stakes-Winner
Melbourne – The Group III MRC Herald Sun Carlyon Cup at Caulfield on Saturday was won by tenacious six year-old Budriguez, a $25,000 purchase for his trainer David Jolly from the Widden Stud draft at the 2008 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.
Budriguez led all the way under Craig Willams, seeing off all challengers to win the 1600 metre feature by a neck, his overall record now 10 wins and six placings from 27 starts with prizemoney of $479,000 providing a great result for his big group of owners.
“At the top of the straight there was not much left, but he toughed it out and he really deserved to win,” said Williams.
“He’s come back well and the owners are set for an exciting autumn with him.”
A son of Al Maher, Budriguez is the first stakes-winner for his dam Deni, a half-sister by St Covet to stakes-placed Fangles from the family of stakes-winner Dashing Vagabond.
Budriguez continues a hot winning run for sales graduates of Widden Stud joining the likes of Shamal Wind and Planet Voyage, who both won at Moonee Valley last night.
