Black Type Victory for General Peekay
Adelaide – Mick Price’s improving three year-old General Peekay scored a career best win at Morphettville on Saturdya when capturing the Listed SAJC Nitschke Stakes.
Featured as a Breednet ‘One to Watch’ when he broke his maiden at Geelong last August, General Peekay was sent around in Listed events at his next two runs, but was a bit short of the mark and was sent back to the paddock.
The son of General Nediym has made good progress since then and after settling back in the field unleashed a big finish to surge past his rivals and win the 1400 metre contest by a nose.
Bred by Antony Thompson and foaled and raised at Widden Stud, General Peekay has the overall record of four wins from 11 starts and more than $154,000 in prizemoney.
He is the second winner from former smart Sydney metropolitan winner Barberton and was retained after being withdrawn from the 2011 Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
Barberton died prematurely in 2011, but has a two year-old filly by Northern Meteor to come and a yearling filly by Haradasun sold for $25,000 at the 2013 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.
General Peekay is the 46th stakes-winner former Widden Stud favourite General Nediym, who died in 2009.
