Group One Winner for General Nediym
Melbourne – The loss of our former top sire General Nediym was highlighted at Caulfield on Saturday when he sired brilliant mare Mrs Onassis to win the Group I MRC Oakleigh Plate.
A homebred for Gerry Harvey prepared by Gerald Ryan, Mrs Onassis won the 1100 metre sprint by a length and has the overall record of eight wins from 18 starts with prizemoney in excess of $500,000.
A five year-old, she has been somewhat of a late bloomer and is a half-sister to Group III winners Miss Judgement and Fifth Avenue Lady being the best of five winners from Miss Jakeo, a daughter of dual Group I winner Lady Jakeo.
Mrs Onassis is the third Group I winner for General Nediym, who died in 2009.
‘The General’ has been running hot in recent weeks with a Group II quinella just last Saturday when his daughters Bennetta and Ichihara fought out the finish of the ATC Light Fingers Stakes.
