Nicconi 2YO Impresses at Grafton
The big Grafton Cup meeting on Thursday attracted a good field for the $45,000 open juvenile event with victory going to progressive Nicconi colt Zumikon.
Trained by Bryan Dais, Zumikon was a dominant winner at Grafton a week ago when breaking his maiden and was sent out favourite for this tougher assignment.
He travelled well up in second place and forged clear to win the 1200 metre sprint by a length, his second win from four starts with prizemoney now just shy of $60,000.
A $90,000 Magic Millions purchase for his trainer from the Lyndhurst Stud Farm draft, Zumikon is one of five winners from good producing Group III winner Chenar, who died last year.
Zumikon is one of 93 winners this season for Widden stud’s quiet achiever Nicconi, whose offspring have racked up an impressive 58.5% winners to runners this season.
He has only one winner less than Widden Stud stalwart Stratum on 94 winners, while Widden’s flagship sire Sebring is up to 115 winners for the season.
A dual Group I winner, Nicconi is unbeatable value at a fee of $11,000.
