Sebring Fillies Prepare for Millions
Leading sire Sebring has a couple of promising juvenile fillies warming up for the $2million Magic Millions Classic in January, both prepared at Eagle Farm by Steve O’Dea.
Dashing grey The Last Kiss all but guaranteed herself a place in next month’s lucrative Gold Coast feature following an outstanding debut win at Doomben on November 21.
She was tardy out of the barriers and endured an awkward run in transit, but quickly put the race beyond doubt in the home straight.
The Last Kiss will run again this Saturday in the Listed BRC Calaway Gal Stakes at Doomben.
O’Dea told Racenet The Last Kiss has taken everything in her stride since her first start.
“She galloped with an older stablemate this morning and it was nice strong work so I’m really happy with how she’s ticking over,” O’Dea said.
“She’s obviously coming back 60 metres in trip from her first-up win so she’s just needed to hold her fitness.”
With four weeks separating the Calaway Gal Stakes and Magic Millions 2YO Classic, O’Dea is still to decide on whether the filly will have another run before the $2 million feature.
“I’ll probably make that decision after she runs and see how she comes through it,” he said.
“She could go to a 1200 metre race at the Gold Coast or go a month straight into the Magic Millions.
“We’ll let her tell us what she needs but she’s not an overly big, robust filly so she probably doesn’t need to run fitness wise.”
O’Dea’s other Sebring Magic Millions contender, Candika, won an unofficial jump-out at Deagon on Tuesday and is set to resume from a freshen-up in the QTIS 2YO Handicap (1110m) at Doomben on Saturday week.
Like The Last Kiss, Candika has virtually sealed a spot in the final field on January 9 having won a Saturday metropolitan race on debut in October.
The Last Kiss was a $10,000 buy back for her breeder Joe Rapisarda at the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale, while Candika was a $100,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Kia Ora Stud draft for Proven Thoroughbreds.
Currently running fifth on the Australian General Sires List by earnings, Sebring has a big draft of 50 catalogued for the 2016 Magic Millions. Click here to see them.
