Star Witness Filly Wins $100,000 VOBIS Gold Carat
Progressive filly Fuhryk scored a lucrative win on New Year’s Eve at Moonee Valley claiming the $100,000 VOBIS Gold Carat (1200m) for her lucky owners.
The lightly raced Fuhryk has won three of four starts and Tom Dabernig, who trains the daughter of Star Witness in partnership with David and Ben Hayes, said the three-year-old is open to further improvement.
“She did everything right and beat the boys and the extra VOBIS cash is always welcome,” Dabernig said.
“She’s had a few little issues at the barriers and things like that. There’s nothing bad with her, it’s just a mental thing. Blinkers helped and she’s improving all the time.
“She won well at Wodonga first-up and she’s just kept on improving. She got held up there but dashed well to win and she’s done the same tonight.
“She worked very well with Tulip earlier in the week and that gave us a lot of confidence with the two-year-old.”
Dabernig said Fuhryk will chase further VOBIS bonus money at Flemington next year.
“There’s a $250,000 race down the straight at Flemington in four weeks time,” Dabernig said.
“It will mean coming back to 1100 metres but the money is too good – it helps pay a lot of bills and it’s a fantastic scheme.”
Fuhryk was a $60,000 Inglis Premier purchase from the Rosemont Stud draft for Lindsay Park Bloodstock and is one of two winners from stakes-placed Fuhrnatic.
Fuhyrk is another smart type for Star Witness, the leading Australian Third Season Sire by earnings.
