Stratum Speedster Wins MM Sprint
Stratum posted juvenile winners at Randwick (Flamboyant Lass) and Flemington (Ragazzo del Corsa) on Saturday and kept the momentum going at the Gold Coast where his five year-old gelding Straturbo scored a fast finishing win in the $176,900 Magic Millions Sprint.
Prepared by Gary Portelli, Straturbo was a winner on debut at Wyong as a three year-old in 2012 and has been consistent since then, zooming home late for James McDonald to take this lucrative sprint over 1100 metres by a long neck.
“I love it when a plan comes together,” said Gary Portelli.
“I thought he could be competitive in this race and it’s a great result for Elite Thoroughbreds as we bought him for just $45,000.
“We do a lot of homework and try and find the horses others miss. I went back the next year and bought his brother for $40,000 and he’s Group Three winner I’m All the Talk.
“I’ve bought seven so far at the sale and hopefully among them are a few more like them.”
Straturbo was bought from the Widden Stud draft at the Magic Millions National Sale and has won six of 26 starts earning just shy of $300,000.
Straturbo was bred by Teeley Assets and is one of three winners from Hussonet (USA) mare Weekend Gossip, a half-sister to multiple Group I winner Mentality.
