Winning Double for Northern Meteor
Exciting first season sire Northern Meteor posted a two state winning double on Wednesday with stylish victories for Equator at Canterbury and The Voice at Balaklava.
Carrying the purple and white stars of Star Thoroughbreds, the Gai Waterhouse trained Equator made it two wins in as many starts when he forged clear to win the 1250 metre juvenile event by a length and a quarter as a well backed favourite.
Equator was a $140,000 Magic Millions purchase from the draft of boutique South Coast based vendor Bell View Park and is the second winner for Sun Maid, a half-sister by Desert Sun (GB) to Group II winner Love of Mary and to the dam of world champion sprinter Sacred Kingdom, who is by Northern Meteor’s sire Encosta de Lago.
Sun Maid was one of 160 mares covered by Northern Meteor last spring.
Second at his two previous runs, the Tony McEvoy trained gelding The Voice was sent out a red hot favourite for the 1300 metre maiden and won as his price would suggest, drawing away to win by a comfortable length and a half.
A $170,000 Magic Millions purchase for McEvoy Mitchell Racing from the Glastonbury Farm draft, The Voice is a half-brother to stakes-placed Rock Band from Ceol Na Sraide (IRE), a half-sister to Group III winner Al Samer from the family of champion sire Danehill.
The Voice is the sixth winner for record breaking sprinter Northern Meteor, winner of the Group I VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes.
