Widden Graduate Wins Queensland Guineas
This day last year Choisir gelding Sir Moments won a Listed race for two year-olds at Eagle Farm and 12 months on he was back at the same venue to score a thrilling last stride win in the Group II BRC Queensland Guineas.
Prepared by Steven O’Dea for a large syndicate of Jamie Walter’s Proven Thoroughbreds owners, Sir Moments threaded his way through the field with an electrifying late dash that saw him claim a half head win in the $350,000 feature.
The win came a day after Jamie Walter said goodbye to his brother Guy at an emotional funeral service at Warwick Farm on Friday.
Jamie Walter, director of syndication company Proven Thoroughbreds, had provided Guy with his first winner, Irish Eve, in 1980 and fittingly his last, Dragon Flyer less than a week before his passing nine days ago.
“I was with him for the first and again for the last but gee, it would’ve been nice to have been with him for some of those 36 Group Is in between,” Jamie noted in a brilliant eulogy.
The brother to one of Australia’s greatest ever trainers had never tasted Group success through his bloodstock business and typical of the Walter mould, was modest in victory.
“It’s been a pretty rugged week but this is a great thrill. We might’ve had a bit of help from above,” Walter said in his post-race comments.
A $40,000 Magic Millions purchase for Proven Thoroughbreds from the draft of Widden Stud, Sir Moments has won four of nine starts earning over $400,000 in prizemoney and was bred by Gooree Stud.
He is the first winner for Colourful Moments, a half-sister by Zabeel to stakes-winner Magsaya from the family of Group I winner Princess Talaria.
